Corten steel, also named weathering steel, is a special steel originally developed for bridge building and skyscraper construction due to its exceptional strength. The steel develops a protective, striking rust appearance on exposure to the weather, creating warm, rich textures that are not always associated with metal. Due to the chemical composition of Corten Steel, a very dense oxidization layer is formed during the weathering process, protecting the blue steel inside. Should this protective barrier be breached, it will simply form a new protective layer to safeguard itself. Corten Steel is highly durable and exhibits significantly greater resistance to atmospheric corrosion than other steels.
